Indy Jazz Fest 2018 - Entrevista a Oscar Micheli
(for English version, scroll down)

THE FOLLOWING IS THE ENGLISH VERSION OF THIS INTERVIEW
Indy Jazz Fest 2018 - A sit down with Dominican pianist Oscar Micheli

A few days ago at the Smoker´s Lounge of the Dominican Fiesta Hotel in Santo Domingo we sat down for what resulted in a very interesting conversation with pianist Oscar Micheli from the Dominican Republic. Oscar ´s trio will be playing at The Jazz Kitchen on September 14th as part of a double bill presentation of Latin Jazz Piano Masters for this year’s version of the Indy Jazz Fest.

Jazz en Dominicana (JenD): In your own words, who is Oscar Micheli?
Oscar Micheli (OM): I am a pianist, composer, arranger, producer and educator from the Dominican Republic, who is a lover of jazz and many a genre, who wants to express messages of love and peace through my music and the piano.

JenD: Musician, composer, arranger, band leader, educator - can you share a little about each of those hats you wear?
OM: As a musician I am a pianist and multiple keyboardist who likes to create sounds and sound textures. As a composer and arranger I like to combine acoustic and electronic sounds. Combine different rhythms to write melodies and orchestral ideas. As an educator I like to investigate every detail of things. Even from my students I learn a lot because it forces me to always keep up to date on issues and subjects, that's where you discover new things; and that helps me to guide each of my students to find their own inner voice. JenD: What was the motivation for you behind you album A New World? OM: Well, at the time when I was composing for the album, I'm was very struck by the news about how the ecosystem has been affected by global pollution and somehow we have to react to stop that. That is reason for the title A New World as well as the design of the cover. That's also why I placed a variety of influences from different cultures of the world in these compositions.

JenD: How would you describe the style that you have in regards to composition, arranging and the playing of your instrument?
OM: Jazz World Music or rather an eclectic style because I feel influenced by many cultures and when I play, everything I hear influences me.

JenD: What proyectos are you working on now?
OM: I have various projects in the oven. A solo album, the 3rd album of the Oscar Micheli Trio, a new book; and, many a practice session for Indy, where we shall be playing on September 14th, and where we plan on sharing our music, hearts and soul with the concert crowd!!

JenD: What has the invitation to play at this year’s version of the Indy Jazz Fest meant to you? OM: Precisely that has represented a before and after for my career. I am very excited about this opportunity to take my music and my roots to other levels and places, and to represent my country in such an esteemed festival. I am super excited and at the same time I recognize that it is a great challenge.

JenD: Who will be playing with you for this presentation?
OM: The trio that in recent years has been together with me, we have really bonded and have a tremendous chemistry, with new ideas always arise in each song we play. Guy Frometa on drums and Roberto Reynoso on bass.

JenD: What type of repertoire will you be presenting at Indy: Any surprises?
OM: We will play songs from the two albums that we have recorded and I want to include new things if God allows us. Since this year’s festival is dedicated to the great trumpeter Freddy Hubbard, we will play our version of his Red Clay. This 1970 song and album of the same name marked a shift toward the soul-jazz fusion sounds that would dominate Hubbard´s recordings in the later part of the decade, we hope to honor him with it!!

JenD: What is Oscar Micheli up to these days?
- As a Musician: practicing new techniques and creating new sounds
- As a Composer: always composing new ideas
- As an Educator: Teacher at the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henriquez Ureña (UNPHU); as well as writing a new book.
- With each project: creating and working hard for the present and future.

Before ending our interview, and after thanking him for his time we asked one last one - ¨Oscar, in your words - that you would like to add and share with our readers:¨
To which he replied: "Let's support good music and new talents. Give us your support for this great opportunity to be part of this Festival (Indy Jazz Fest) as part of the Dominican Republic. I invite all public and private institutions to support this cause. Our country needs new international images that carry our culture, our music and jazz is a universal language that changes, unites and educates people¨.
