Neil Portnow, Presidente y CEO
Academia Nacional de las Artes y las Ciencias (NARAS)

Sr. Portnow,

Atentamente,

Fernando Rodríguez de Mondesert
Presidente
Jazz en Dominicana

ENGLISH VERSION:
On Wednesday April 6th, the National Academy Of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) announced a “restructuring” of the Grammy Awards, which included, amongst others, the elimination of the Latin Jazz Grammy. Citing a lack of entries into the Latin Jazz category, NARAS simply folded the Latin Jazz Grammy into the remaining awards in the jazz category - Jazz Vocal Album, Instrumental Jazz Album, or Large Jazz Ensemble Album. This act undermines the integrity of Latin Jazz and disregards its importance as a major piece of the cultural landscape in the United States. We simply can’t let this attack on Latin Jazz go unnoticed - it’s time to take a stand and support the music that we love.
If you want to support in requesting NARAS to reinstate these categories for GRAMMY consideration of Latin Jazz, World Music, Native American, Cajun/Zydeco, Hawaiian, Contemporary Jazz, Traditional Blues, Norteño, Instrumental Rock, and the categories that are outside the pop/entertainment genre in order to maintain the integrity of what the GRAMMY signifies, then please sign the petition by visiting the following website: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/latinjazzatthegrammys

We, at Jazz en Dominicana have not only signed the petition, but as well have sent the following letter to NARAS and it´s President, Neil Portnow.

June 12th, 2011

Neil Portnow, President and CEO
National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS)

Mr. Portnow,

Our organization, Jazz en Dominicana, a proyect that promotes Jazz in the Dominican Republic and it’s 4900+ members are opposed as well as ashamed of the decision made by NARAS to eliminate over 30 categories (including Latin and Contemporary Jazz).

The Grammys have always reflected the diversity and multiculturalism of its membership and awards; reasons that make us truly believe that your decision demonstrates a real lack of understanding in many areas including the history and value of many US art forms, including Latin Jazz.

Furthermore we believe the eliminated categories are singular in their heritage and musical skills and structures; Latin Jazz, Contemporary Jazz, Contemporary and Traditional Folk, Norteño, Tejano and Zydeco, in particular, deserve the separate Grammy acknowledgements that they’ve been afforded until this change eliminated them.

WE FORMALLY REQUEST NARAS to reverse their decision immediately and reinstate these categories for Grammy consideration.

Sincerely,

Fernando Rodríguez De Mondesert
President
Jazz en Dominicana
